AI Compliance
AI tools are entering trade compliance in three areas: restricted party screening with fuzzy name matching and entity resolution, ECCN classification based on product specifications, and regulatory change monitoring. The promise is real — AI can process more names, catch more alias variations, and flag more regulatory updates than a manual process. The limitations are equally real. We've tested classification tools that consistently misclassify dual-use electronics because the training data overrepresents commercial applications. Screening tools that optimize for recall produce hit rates too high to review manually. The BIS and OFAC standard for reasonable compliance doesn't change because you used AI — the human review and documentation obligation remains. We cover where AI tools genuinely reduce workload and where they create new failure modes.
