US Exports

US exports totaled approximately $3.1 trillion in goods and services in 2024, but the compliance obligations attached to those exports vary dramatically by product and destination. Capital goods, industrial machinery, and chemicals are the largest goods export categories — all with potential export control implications depending on specifications. EEI filing through AES is required for most export shipments above $2,500. For controlled items, an export license or documented license exception is required before the shipment leaves US territory. The most common compliance gap for US goods exporters: treating export controls as a licensing question only and missing the screening obligation — the requirement to verify that the buyer, end user, and intermediaries aren't on the denied party or Entity Lists regardless of whether the product requires a license.
