India Trade Compliance

India's trade volume is growing fast, but the compliance picture hasn't simplified to match. India isn't in all the multilateral export control regimes, which narrows your license exception options for controlled technology. BIS requirements depend on who the Indian end user is and what they're doing with it — defense-connected buyers can trigger additional EAR requirements that don't apply to commercial end users.

India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade runs its own import licensing and controls. On tariff classification, be careful: India's applied rates on manufactured goods run higher than a lot of exporters budget for. Verify your Indian partners against the Consolidated Screening List, and pay extra attention to any defense-sector connections.
