Taiwan Tariffs

Taiwan is the US's eighth-largest trading partner and the source of a significant portion of global semiconductor output. The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade, under negotiation since 2022, has not yet produced a preferential tariff agreement — meaning Taiwanese goods still enter the US at standard MFN rates. Semiconductors face 0% MFN tariff, but advanced packaging and printed circuit assemblies can attract higher rates depending on classification. Taiwan's own tariff schedule averages 6.3% MFN, with high rates on agricultural and some industrial categories. We cover HS classification for tech hardware, origin issues for goods assembled in Taiwan from non-Taiwanese inputs, and how Section 301 Chinese-origin rules interact with Taiwanese manufacturing.
