Section 232 Tariffs
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 authorizes tariffs when imports threaten national security. The steel (25%) and aluminum (10–25%) measures imposed under this authority in 2018 remain in effect. A Section 232 investigation into copper is active. Derivative articles — products that contain steel or aluminum as a significant input — can also be subject to the measures if specifically listed. Country exclusions exist but require application, and quota-based arrangements with allies impose volume caps. We track derivative product lists, country-specific quota consumption, and the Commerce Department ruling process for new Section 232 measures.
