Tariff Code

A tariff code — the HTS number in US trade, the CN code in the EU, the HS code at the 6-digit international level — is the classification that determines duty rates, import controls, and statistical reporting. In the US, the full 10-digit HTS number is required on all entry documentation. The first 6 digits are internationally harmonized under the WTO Harmonized System; the last 4 digits are US-specific and can differ from classification in other countries even for identical goods. CBP issues binding rulings on HTS classification, and a ruling that covers your product protects you from reclassification — unless CBP revokes or modifies it with proper notice under 19 CFR 177. We cover classification methodology, ruling requests, and protest procedures when CBP disagrees.
