Japan Trade Compliance

Japan is a close ally, a big market for US manufacturers, and still a place where compliance details trip people up. The US-Japan Trade Agreement covers select goods but it's not a full FTA — so tariff treatment depends heavily on what you're shipping.

Japan's export controls under the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act are close to the EAR but not identical, which creates subtle gaps. Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum still apply in the other direction. And here's one that catches exporters repeatedly: Japan's tariff schedule classifies the same physical product differently than the US HTS in some cases. Assuming your US classification carries over is a common and expensive mistake.
